I took quite the sabbatical from blogging while I was writing my first book, I AM THAT GIRL. But the good news is…. I’M BAAAACK!!! To be a good writer, in my opinion, you have to chase down adventures so that you have rich life experiences to share and unique life perspectives to offer. I think writers can often become stale because the inspiration that fuels their voice dwindles, and they are forced to live off the laurels of their past experiences and like all of us, growth fuels inspiration. Needless to say, I’ve been busy growing and so much has happened since we chatted last. More importantly, I’m thrilled to yet again be speaking to you through the blinking cursor on my Macbook. When I’m on the road, in a taxi, plane, office or lounging on my couch… I’m excited to share a bit of my life with you.
Anytime I speak, I always say that I’m simply honored to have a conversation with you because I fully recognize that I have as much to learn from you as you do from me. The same goes for my writing. It’s not that I’m necessarily inventing novel thoughts (though I’d like to think that every now and again I whip up something clever), the reality is that I write for the ONE. I may not inspire every single one of you and that would be preposterously arrogant to assume such a thing. My stories may not resonate and some days may be more impactful than others. But I do know this: life is hard sometimes. We get our hearts broken, we watch our loved ones battle illnesses, we have hiccups and bumps and bruises along this rather confusing thing called life, and sometimes, it’s just nice to know that there is someone out there sending a little love our way and reminding us that we aren’t alone. If anything, I’d like to be that person for you. Just a little reminder that you are indeed awesome.
So here is to the beginning of my little writing love affair. Read. Enjoy. Blush. Laugh. Clap. Cry. Share. And revel in knowing you are precious, in case you have forgotten.
Being asked to speak to the top 18 high school quarterbacks was one of the coolest experiences. Here are two videos from my interview with the host of Elite 11, Yogi Roth, and then finally an excerpt from my talk with the men!
“Football is what you do, it’s an action, you get up, you go to practice and you fight for it on the field…Who you are has to be separate from what you do and who you are is the caliber of the man you are, who you are is your integrity, who you are is ‘How you do all things is how you do small things’.”
I was impressed with Alexis from the very moment I met her. In a world of pressures, comparisons, and anxieties, Alexis is enlightening, empowering, and focused. I have no doubt in my mind that Alexis will stand out for this generation of women, as a leader, and as an inspiration.
Alexis and I went to college together and it was then I told her “one day you’re going to take over the world.” She is one of the most inspiring, motivating, beautiful people I have ever known. Her work ethic is second to none and it is because of that that she has made a tremendous difference in not only young females lives but also young males.
My soul sister, girl-who-can-finish-my-sentences-before-I-do Alexis Jones. We were sorority sisters. And best friends. I knew she was special then. She was magnetic. Motivated. Excited about everything. A truly shining light. Lex is starting a movement and she is setting the tone for all of us.
Alexis’ inspirational message on how girls can be perfectly flawed and be self confident in how they view themselves and treat each other in our world today truly exceeded my expectations as a principal. She talked about how she became who she is today, gave examples of how society defines beauty, and how Hollywood skews our girls’ reality. She talked about the importance of treating each other with dignity and respect and that girls are all on the same team. The girls adore her, respect her, relate to her message, and want to be “that girl”. Her message has spawned an “I Am That Girl Club” at West Ridge and is changing the overall culture of our school. As long as I am the principal at West Ridge, Alexis Jones and her message will be a part of our school and community.

I can’t think of a better role model for the youth of American than Alexis Jones. She is a force of nature. She is a tornado of positive energy. There is nothing this woman can’t do and her can do attitude is contagious. Listening to her speak empowers me as a woman to dream, create and achieve, all in a way that helps the world and brings joy into my life.

I would say that Ms. Alexis Jones is the future voice of women in the world, but she is our voice NOW. It is not often you come across a person who can transcend boundaries of celebrity, substance, business and doing good. Ms. Jones’ sharp wit and deep commitment are a combination that directs results based movements. It has been awesome to watch her accomplish everything she puts her mind to and I can’t wait to see what is next!
I have forever been impacted by the zeal, passion & conviction of Alexis Jones. She is like a miniature sun… orbiting around humanity – inspiring young girls to embrace their inner-power… and to truly believe they are more than they think they are. She is a powerhouse and a leader for the next generation of leaders.
Alexis Jones is brilliantly inspiring; wicked smart and totally captivating in every sense of the word. She is a true leader and visionary in the world of women’s empowerment. I’m honored to call her a colleague and friend. Anything she touches is graced with her deep beauty, charm and commitment to making the world a better place.
